No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
