Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
